Suggestions please!
I have a 2004 ranger 500 that I will be rebuilding the top end on. I would like more bottom end and some top end would be nice also. The bottom end is the most important, I do realize there is a trade off to some degree. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Wow, a whole week went by with no help on this. Guess it's time to find a better forum.

Other than changing the clutching setup, you still have a 500 trying to move over 1000 lbs.

Agree with dwhst. Clutching is a much easier way to gain bottom end IMO. Going to be tough to gain bottom and top end at the same time though. I'd call a clutch company (I don't advocate any particular one) and tell them what you're looking for and maybe they could give you some ideas

I haven't seen anything in the way of engine parts to hotrod a 500. With as long as Polaris has been using this engine if there were hotrod parts it would probably be common knowledge. I put a K&N filter and a Biggun exhaust on mine but I cant say it did anything in the way of bottom end. Seems a little snappier and sounds better in my opinion but nothing to rave about. I think your best bet as mentioned is re clutching. If you do find another forum that has some info on performance for a 500 pass it along. There are lots of people here who would be interested. I think you didn't get any responses for a while because for the most part people on this forum avoid being negative and I don't think anyone wanted to shoot you down. Who knows maybe someone knows how to hotrod these things. We can hope.

Thanks guys for the input. I inherited this ranger from my father, he upgraded to an 800. The top end needs rebuilding, so I was entertaining the thoughts of adding a cam, some head work, and depending on the cylinder, maybe boring. I'm not planning on getting to much into boring if I don't have to. I was hoping that maybe some others have already done this and could give some feedback on if it actually helped or not. Wouldn't want to spend the money for little or no gain. I probably should have stated that first, I was hoping that some opinions would have helped me decide. Thanks again for your replies.

+1 on the clutching. I am have ordered a $25 spring from EPI to modify just the primary clutch. Should make a big difference. (It did on my trailblazers a couple years ago).

If the top-end needs a rebuild, you could always get the head cut down while you have it apart to give you a bump in compression.

Clutching will assist you in what you are wanting. Quad shop customs can make these things pretty mean with some machined weights, spring, and a helix for the secondary.

I'd check with some of the cam supplyers for the 4 stroke dirt bikes, maybe they can cut one for you. But like the others have said it's hard to have both worlds. ALOT OF TOP END OR ALOT OF LOW END,the two don't mix.
