Synthetic rope set up.. fairlead help???
Right now I have a cable winch set up and it needs to go. It just broke on me tonight while plowing and I'm bout sick of dealing with it. So, synthetic I go. My question is about the fairleads, is the hawse fairlead or the UHMW roller fairlead the way to go???
Only thing I’ve read is the UHMW can bind with snow and ice and could cause problems. And some guys don't like the idea of the rope rubbing on a solid piece of aluminum (hawse).
My primary use at the moment is plowing, but I use it when I am stuck too.
I plan on running a shorter rope (12 foot) for plowing and 50 for summer months with a winch saver on it.
I have not purchase anything yet so,
Any suggestions or direction would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Guys

I installed a synthetic rope over a year ago with an aluminum fairlead. I run a 12ft winch rope in the winter for plowing and change over to a 50ft rope for the rest of the year. So far the fairlead has performed flawlessly.

I figured if im installing the synthetic, i might as well install the new fairlead too, due to the cable burring the oringial one all up..
educ8r-So, you did the basic aluminum fairlead with the rollers??? Or the solid one?
thanks

I just bought a hawse for my switch to synthetic. They can be had cheap many places... $20 or so...
I will install it tomorrow with a 12 ft plow line. Make sure it's rolled on the edges where it will touch rope.

The solid aluminum. Get one of those rubber winch savers to put on the line to help protect the fairlead. Good luck.

The solid fairlead is so the rope doesn't get caught between the rollers and damaged.

Just got some synthetic rope and was wondering how to you put the hook on ? Do you tie a knot? wrap around and tape it ? Just wondering ?
Thanks

I ordered mine from warrico. They come with a thimbal in 1 end. If my hook from the cable is too small to go over it I plan on getting a small shackel for it.
