Questions about a 2002 Polaris Sportsman 700

I went and looked at a 2002 Polaris 700 Sportsman today. The gauge said N 254 is that 254 miles or Hours? Any whats the N stand for? Maybe north? Does this model have both readings if so how do I switch back and forth to see each one? Is 254 miles or hours good for this year?

Hes bottom doller is $2,500. Its in very good shape. Anything I should test or check for?

Thanks

No idea what the N stand for, it does not have heading readings though. When it displays the hours, it has a little hour glass symbol that will be on also. It does keep track of hours and miles, and the yellow override button will scroll through the various screens. 254 miles is good, 254 hours is a lot.

Check for the basic things, signs of fluid leaking, broken body plastics. With ATV's it is much easier to tell if they have been rode hard and put away wet then with a car as it has less plastic around its critical parts. Just give everything a good look over. Most ATVs though have been ridden hard, so keep that in mind when looking at it.

I have the same bike and the N makes no sense unless you had it in neutral. Like blueline15 said hit the yellow override button to see total milage, trip milage and hours. I am going to guess that the 254 was hours or trip miles. Mine has 2200 miles on it and about 300 hours and most that I have seen around 2002 model year have close to the same.

Im beting if its suppose to show the N when in neutral. Thats what it was then. Ill check using the override button tomorrow and check it out. When it showed the 254 there was NO hour glass beside it so was that showing the total miles then?

TimberGhost how will I know the differance between the trip miles and total miles? just guessing which ever is the higher one will be the miles on it. Correct? How do you reset the trip miles on it?

Im sure when I see the one showing the hour glass that will tell me more about which miles is correct too. Guessing.

The old man doesnt know much about it, hes son past away a few years ago and has been sitting. He said he starts it each year but this year the battery went dead. We did jump it and ran great. Whats a battery run for one of these things?

Oh one last thing does it have a 4X4 on the shifter to ingauge manually or when it slips it does it on its own?
I would prefer to engauge it myself as needed. I forgot to look at it close.

Thanks Again guys!

It was either showing total miles or trip miles. Again I am guessing trip miles unless the previous owner just never used it.

You will know the difference if you hit the yellow override button, you will have two milages: Total miles on machine, trip miles and then the hours with the hour glass symbol and then the hour glass symbol and wrench symbol showing hours till next maintenance and then it starts over with total milage. These are the only four options you will have. To reset the trip miles hit the yellow override button until you get to the trip miles and then hold the override button for about 5 seconds and it will reset to zero.

Battery will run you about $100.00 or so.

Polaris is the only machine that has true AWD and engages only when it slips and does it so fast that it will never cause any problems or cause you to get stuck. You can choose to run 2WD or AWD though. If you flip the switch on the right handle bar that says AWD it will be in AWD when slippage occurs. If you have the switch to AWD off then no matter how much slipping you will only have rear wheels driving and will not have AWD.

the first thing you should test is the AWD system. it's polaris' strong point AND weak point. 254 miles is not much if it has been taken care of. 254 miles of abuse is hard on any machine though.
