Help me decide

I'm looking to purchase a new ATV with power steering. I have owned Can-Am, Yamaha and Honda over the years. All have been very reliable. I'm looking at a 550 XP or Touring.
Are they reliable?
I have logged thousands of miles on past ATV's with no problems. Can I expect the same. I would like to hear from owners with lots of miles. I know others that have owned older Polaris ATV's and had many problems. Are they better now?
Thanks

No they are not reliable in the sense of simplicity of design. Polaris pushes the edge of technology I think more than any other ATV manufacturer. With that, comes risk in that the innovation may have problems because the manufacturer cannot test the machine to the degree that the buying public will. And that innovation will require more attention to maintenance. If an XP battery dies in the middle of the woods, you have no backup. This risk requires the owner check their battery more than normal and ride with another ATV to mitigate the risk of walking out of the woods. The enjoyment of the innovation needs to be managed by intelligent owners who understand what they have and are willing to study the machine to quanitfy its extraordinary capabilities, limits, and risks. My 1986 Honda ATC 250R was reliable because it had no battery to fail, the entire design was simple and proven over years of racing, and I carried an extra spark plug. Reliability can be subjective depending on a person's point of view. I think an ATV with a battery and a kick start would be more reliable than a Polaris XP. So the decision can be equated to do you want a Porsche or Chevrolet? Decision analysis includes weighting those characteristics most important to the individual. The right decision is the product best suited to the owner.

Great summary stealth!

I would agree. You will have to maintenance this machine more but the ride is worth it.

I agree with what you are saying. I want the right balance of technology and reliability. I owned a 2007 Grizzly and a 2008 Can-am. Both ATV's were very reliable over thousands of miles. I traded the Grizzly because I didn't like the ride. The Can-Am I plan to keep for my son to ride. I just wondered how the Polaris compared to other current ATV's. I ride in areas where it would be almost impossible to tow it out if it died.
Thanks for you feedback.
