No they are not reliable in the sense of simplicity of design. Polaris pushes the edge of technology I think more than any other ATV manufacturer. With that, comes risk in that the innovation may have problems because the manufacturer cannot test the machine to the degree that the buying public will. And that innovation will require more attention to maintenance. If an XP battery dies in the middle of the woods, you have no backup. This risk requires the owner check their battery more than normal and ride with another ATV to mitigate the risk of walking out of the woods. The enjoyment of the innovation needs to be managed by intelligent owners who understand what they have and are willing to study the machine to quanitfy its extraordinary capabilities, limits, and risks. My 1986 Honda ATC 250R was reliable because it had no battery to fail, the entire design was simple and proven over years of racing, and I carried an extra spark plug. Reliability can be subjective depending on a person's point of view. I think an ATV with a battery and a kick start would be more reliable than a Polaris XP. So the decision can be equated to do you want a Porsche or Chevrolet? Decision analysis includes weighting those characteristics most important to the individual. The right decision is the product best suited to the owner.
