Sorry to hear about your father. I really am.
Maybe, wait a few weeks before deciding to sell it, when the emotions are not so fresh? Either way its totally up to you. The good news is that with it hardly used and in good running condition, you should be able to get top dollar.
KBB has you machine priced at $5,015 and NADA has it priced at $5,115. But you need to be an educated seller when you deal with buyers. Currently, polaris does not offer the 500 in EFI anymore. There are also some killer deals out there on new machines from dealers, especially on overstock. So when you talk with potential buyers, you need to make sure they understand that this has EFI and why that is overall usually better then carbs, and that is also has ADC, and what that is, and that in 2008, it was an extra $1000 for the EFI and ADC.
Its important you can sell these features to potential buyers, otherwise they are going to wonder why they should pay around $5k for a used machine 3 years old, when they can get a brand new '11 500 spmn for probably around $5k. But they wont have ADC, EFI.
The last thing to do, is call local dealers and ask them what their OTD (out-the-door) price is on their sportsman 500's new and any used similar in year to yours. Try to price yours a few hundred less then a new 500 from the dealer, and really really sell the EFI and ADC (since it was a $1,000 option in '08) and you should have a buyer, especially if they know how nice these two features are.
Good luck. My thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time.
