Dealer Prep and Assembly

OK,

My local dealership wants to charge me $690 for shipping and set up of a Sportsman HO 500.

That seems a little steep to me.

Thoughts?

Curtis

Absolutely! I use to sell polaris atv's, I have also uncrated them. The shipping and handling fee is a joke.

They are charged about $300 in shipping, but most machines still have about a $1000 markup even after the dealer pays polaris this shipping.

Otherwise, you are paying them $690 for them to pay some kid $8 an hour to install a battery, put some gas in it, and ride it out of the crate. An then pay some mechanic about $20 in commission to check air pressure, lug nuts, wiring, etc.

The fee fattens the owners wallet, straight up!

I'd rather spend a couple hundred on gas and drive to another dealer than deal with that BS. Keep in mind that if they're already trying to give you the shaft on the purchase, they probably won't be very pleasant to deal with when it comes to parts, service, or warranty work either.

Don't pay it, tell the salesman no sale unless the set up fees are dropped and chances are he will drop them.

Ok, I will call around and get some other prices too. there is another dealer not too far away.

He is not coming down off the price anymore than the rebate of $300.00 so No deals here.

Well, I called another dealership that is not too far away from me.

They do NOT have any shipping or prep charges!! They even told me if I bought two, the would sell both Polaris 500 HO's to me for $5500 each. The only charge the add on is a $25 dollar charge, but this is to register the ATV's for me so I don't have to do it and of course sales tax.

I told the salesman that I was dealing with the dealership locally and I could tell that they must get a lot of calls and complaints about them. He didn't specifically say so, but i just got that feeling from the conversation. So I am not even going to haggle with this other dealership. I will just go with the one that is a bit of a drive. Screw the local guys.

Thx all.

I can tell you the dealers who don't charge freight and set up fees are usually the better ones to desk with down the road.
