So what did I end up with............

Alright.

I started looked for a used 500 for plowing, yard utility, and of course some fun - and after about a month I was frustrated with people wanting 4k for 10 yr old machines and craigslist scams that were transparent

So - I went to a few dealers to look for a new one. While there - I quickly realized that in order for my wife to use the quad to plow - I would need EPS

So - that put us into a 2011 550 with EPS. I knew it would do everything I would need. I considered an 800 - but although the price was the best deal - obviously its not available with EPS. I also considered the 850xp EPS -but the oil in the airbox issue turned me off.

So - unfortunately I got delayed for about a month with work and by the time I got back to the dealer - the red 2011 550 XP EPS had sold the day before (was still being prepped in the back room)

So I had them write up te paper work on the 2012.

The next day I stopped in and told them that I was sort of second guessing myself and maybe I should get the 850 knowing that I would never NEED that much power or speed - but - well, it sure would be fun to have. The dealer convinced me that for my use - the 550 is all I will ever need.

The next day a guy from work who turns out to be an ATV guru and goes to some camp he belongs to, several times a year, told me that the 550 was a very nice machine. He said it in a weird way. So - after some prodding - he comes out with it. "YA - I agree on your 11 acres you will never need the 850's power - BUT - who cares. Your spending that much money - whats a little bit more to have the big boy. Even if you take it away a few times a year and get off your yard - it will be more fun......BUT.....the 550 will still be a great machine and Im sure you will love it."

I immediately called the dealer and said.......Im very sorry to do this since I know my quad is probably ready - but lets switch it up - Ill take the 2012 magnetic metallic 850 HO EPS that I saw out front........

Picking it up tomorrow morning.

SO - I got caught up in the MORE HP, MORE SPEED, MORE POWER battle and I know I need none of it....BUT........It should be fun!!!!!!!!!

I also got a winch,plow, dealer mounting, and a 3 year warranty.

I know I payed more than I had to if I wanted to drive far away- but the dealer is literally 3 miles from my house - and - I trust them and they put up with me being a pain in the ass.

They would not match the 500 better price that I found a few hours away - but I can live with that - if they service me well over the next couple of years - its worth it!

I cant believe that I spent that much on the ATV........Man, Im an idiot.

You will be happy with your selection. No worries. And don't lose any sleep over the possibility of oil in the air box. If it happens, no big deal. Take it in and have them fix it. It's not something that would leave you stranded out on the trail.
Enjoy!!!

Most ATV owners spend more on their quad than they ever imagined. Your friend gave you good advice. You will enjoy the machine and the sticker-shock will soon wear off. Congrats.
