Break in service
Can I politely rant about my local dealer. I bought a 09 spm 800 three weeks ago. It was a brand new zero miles unit, I got it for a fair price. My dealer told me it needed a break in service at 10 hours. So three weeks, 40 miles 10 hours later I call the dealer and ask him how much the break in service would cost and I couldn't believe what he said. The service Rep told me it would cost $280 to $300 for the break in service. I could barely mutter the words what will you be doing for three hundred dollars. He proceeded to tell me they would change all the fluids, Tork down the rotors and do a front end alignment. He said they would go through the machine front to back. This has me wondering, really front end alignment after 40 miles, tork down the rotors. Shouldn't this stuff be done during the preparation? They did charge me $227 for preparation. WTF is this, I can't believe I spent $8000 on a machine (including extended warranty) and three weeks later have to pay for a front end alignment. What the hell did they do for my 227 dollar prep fee. Ok I'm done ranting now thanks for listening.

Did you not consider doing the service yourself ? My dealer said I could bring mine back in or do it myself he's never seen the machine again

I agree and would like to do it but I'm having trouble finding a service manual. Someone posted they got theirs from Polaris but I can't find them on their website. Either way they wont be doing it.

You can get a service manual through the dealer.
Just do the 1st service yourself. It'll save you a lot of money.

Ok I will call the dealer. That link doesn't have the 800 twin. They made 3 different 800s in 09 from what I'm told, the 800, 800 le and the 800 twin.

I would do this fluid change and general checkover myself, you get to know your machine better that way and know when something really needs attention.

my dealer was $489 for the first service (brake pads and 1 rotor to) and 5 and change for the 50 hr service(needed 2 new low beam bulbs)..now that its out of the 6 month warranty..it will never see that dealer again..
Polaris sent me a letter and questionnaire about the performance of my dealer.
So I let them know how I feel about that dealer and of the "maintenance cost" of the ATV compared to my 2011 ford ranger is astronomical. I let them know I will NEVER go back to that dealer because of the cost...come on $100 an hr to change oil and fluids...you have got to be kidding me.
1 summer of riding almost cost me $1000 in service fees from my dealer..Now that's Crazy shit!
ford truck 7,894 km....$65
Polaris ATV 980 km.....$1000
I have since found a reputable ATV mechanic to service my bike at $50hr and parts are cost.

Somebody gave you wrong information.
In 2009 they only had technically two 800 models, and so they had two different 800 manuals. They were all a twin. Any of the LE models were only paint, wheels, and maybe some accessories, but the manual was exactly the same.
They also had an 800 6x6 model. So I guess one could call them three different models. The 6x6 did have its own service manual, but its pretty clear to tell if you have a 6x6.
The service manual you need is found here. 2009 Polaris Sportsman 800 HO EFI Do it Yourself Repair Manuals from RepairManual.com - Call 800-426-4214 Part # Part # 9921795
The OEM service manual is well worth the money compared to the clymers manual listed below it.
