I bought an '11 550xp non eps, OTD 6500. Got a 2500 pound winch and 52" blade for another $750....

I didn't even test drive an 850, probably should have, but this is my first toy so I was thinking start out small....

I dont believe this is good advise...He wants a 550...believe it or not there are people out there that do not want or need a 70+ mph ATV ...that does wheelies and eats gas like its a V8....

The 550 is a great machine and you will not be out anything for having one.it is completely capable of doing everything you ask from it....

The prices seem to change from state to state and from USA to Canada..

here is a link to the dealership in my area. To give you an idea of up here...
Polaris Industries Sportsman® 550 - Polaris Pursuit® Camo D.T. POWERSPORTS UXBRIDGE, ON (905) 852-3932

front/rear brushguards
3500 lbs syn winch
camo (extra 400)
9600.OTD

The rebates were more in the spring of 2011.If i remember correctly I got $2400 in rebates and free install on the accessories. I walked away happy feeling I got a good deal..But after looking at the 12's I think that my 2011 had a higher sticker price then the 12 advertised..

Well, personally, I am an all or nothing kind of guy, so that is probably the root of my advice. If gas is a concern, then find out what the difference is in mileage per gallon. The 550 does seem to have good power, but on steep inclines, you'll definitely feel the power difference. Skizmo, will you agree that there is nothing wrong with having more power IF it is needed/wanted? I am not disagreeing with anyone who says that you do not NEED anything more than a 500, but this is about WANT, not NEED. I have said this in other threads and I will say it again. You will never get the 850 home and feel like it has too much power, but you might get a 550 home and feel like you WANT more power. If you plan on keeping the ATV long term, then I suggest you get something that will please you for years to come. It is cheaper to go easy on the throttle than it is to make the 550 more powerful.
