Question Looking for a 4WD ATV, Need advice

My only experience with ATV's is a Banshee I've been riding for several years. I got it blown up and in about 5 buckets worth of parts. Not exactly a beginner's ride, especially for someone who only has woods and (sometimes) trails to ride. So I'm looking at a Sportsman (likely a 700). I've heard all good things about them; Really good AWD and IRS, pretty easy to work on and get parts for, and can even carry a second rider. Is there anything I should look out for? Any common problems to check? I'm going to look at one tomorrow afternoon. Can anyone tell me what the compression should be (i'm at ~ 1000ft above sea level). Thanks!

If you like Banshee sporty try a Can Am Renegade.

IMO, I ride Polaris, the XPs are the best.

if you are looking for new, any model will do that fits your price range... wont have problems with it for YEARS...

the prices today on used atv are SO VERY close to the prices of new atvs...

if your looking for something that will e easy to fix and get parts, id say the best would be the 500... has not changed in years...
although it might lack power for some... then go for the 800... the engine is still on new machines...

most likely the price on the used 500-800 (not very old, but like 2004-2009) will be at large 1000$ more and you get a new machine...

so if your willing to spend.. for example 4200 on a used machine, might consider adding a 1000 or so $ and getting new...
less problems,
you will know how the machine is used and will treat it like you want it to be....

hope i helped.

Thanks. But I'm gonna have to save for quite a LONGGGG time to get something new. I've found a sportsman 700 (needs work/not running) for $1800. Anything I should be especially leery of? What compression should I see on a healthy engine?

I'd be worried if it didn't have at least 100 psi per cylinder.
$1800 is too much if something serious is wrong.
You can't ride it to make sure anything even works!
Forget it if it doesn't have EBS or ADC.

I'd rather a guy saves up and gets a good modern atv than an old POS that leaves a bad taste for atvs and that brand.
