Used ATV Values...

Was looking around on autotrader.ca, and just about crapped my pants when I saw what used Sportsmans were going for, like 4 years old, fairly high mileage, $1,200 less than new. Is this normal?

Makes going new easier to swallow.

"Yes" and "No." All depends on the condition/use of the machine.

For example, I got my 2005 Sportsman last year for CAN $6000. This came with the Kolpin gun boot, 4 X 6ft trailer, snow plow and 150 hours. Some of the plastic was broken which is why I got it for a bit less. I purchased new plastic for $200 and it was all good.

The other day I seen a 2005 Sportsman 700 with no other accessories for CAN $6000 but it only had 6 hours on it.

I have found the used prices to be a bit high and accurate, for the most part.
Just don't try to get a dealer to give you that kind of number if you want to trade.
I just sold a '05 Yammy BigBear for $4k - 1200 less than I paid for it new. I bought a new Polaris 550 efi - (very nice machine).
I had no problems selling the Yammy.
Tried to trade it on a new Yammy at the dealer I bought the BigBear from; I was so surprised at what they offered me that I walked out p'd off and never to return. I made a trip to a Polaris dealer and discussed trade-in prices, decided to sell my machine privately and buy the 550 outright at the best price possible - that's what I told the PoPo dealer. He called me later in the day and asked what I would offer him over invoice - we made the deal right then!
Moral of this story - if you want to sell a machine do it privately, there are lots of buyers out there looking for good used machines.
What's up with what dealers offer on a trade - no idea!

I was offered $2200 for my 06 500EFI, I told the dealer I would keep it before I would give it to him at that price.
So that is what I did.I kept it and now I have a second atv to take family or friends riding.

You did the right thing there. For $2200 I would of told him to "eat my hat!"

Just purchased a 10 850 touring with eps. Was going to trade 05 Griz 660 until they told me that they would give me only 3500+/- depending on condition-. My out the door price on new machine with a couple of accessories and lic was just almost 4X this. Sold it privately-it wasn't mint, but it was in very good conditon, under 1500 miles and had a set of 26" swamplites on M9 rims with only 400 miles. Kid that bought it was very happy to pay very close to my asking price, and I had lots of other calls on it.
Seems like when dealers are selling either new or used, their machine is worth a lot, but if you're trying to trade in a used unit, it isn't worth peanuts... (imho)

i've heard from my dealer the reason they offer such low trade in prices for used atv's is because selling them is hard because banks won't finance used atv's with as competitive interest rates as new. i've looked on craigslist and you can find some decent deals on slightly used atv's.

Some also depends on how much seller needs to pay off. For example, I've seen 09 (500 4x4) with normal miles and hours on it going for $5000-$6000. Probably because they paid close to $7000 for it and need payoff. My buddies went 3 hours to another state (Oklahoma) and bought same Atv (3 of them with no tax in Oklahoma) for $4995 out the door. The same place quoted me $5200 for a '10 because of a few options. So, with low miles and hours, they could probably make money on theirs because they got such a good deal. If you pay $7000, then you are going to have to list it high to make most of your payoff. I wanted to pay cash for mine and it was hard to find one when I could get a brand new one for just over $5000. Just keep looking and there are some good deals out there. I found my '05 sportsman 400 4x4 with 70 hours and 800 miles on it for $3000

When i got my 2005 sportsman 800 i got it used. I went into the dealer looking to buy a brand new 2009 550xp, I could buy it new for $8000, which is a good deal where a live as the 550 yammy goes for about $9500. So i was ready to make the deal on the new 550xp but then i found out that the mechanic had his 800 for sale, its a 2005 sportsman 800 with 2400 miles and 280 hours. He told me that he got the bike at a discounted price to begin with so he told me he would sell it to me for 4200. So i didn't even hesitate and ended buying a used sportsman and saving a lot of money. After i bought it i decided to look around for to see what other 800 sportsman were going for and i couldn't find one for under 6000. So i guess if your really lucky you can get amazing deals on used atvs, you just need to know where to look.
