Howdy Neighbor!
I just had my first desert race (a Euro Scramble) out in Lucerne Valley (AMA District 37) week before last. I ride a Predator 500, and while it did well, the suspension beat me up.
Are you Brandon? He is the only one I have heard of that rides an Outlaw in the desert races. (Never met him.) There are a handful of Polaris riders in the Big 6 Grand Prix series. You might check that out as well. Also, there is a motocross series starting in June if you liek that sort of thing.
Anyway, I went out stone cold to my first race and learned a lot about how TO and how NOT to prep your quad for desert.
The Pred has plenty of power. Stock exhaust, but replaced airbox with a Uni fitler and rejetted with Dynojet kit. This really woke it up.
I canned the Maxxis Razr's for Kenda Kutters (22's) in front and Kenda Knarly's (20's) in the rear and they are wonderful. I came off the line like a rocket with less slip and more power to the ground than with the old Razr's. Kutter on front do not slide or push - they go where you point them - which takes some getting used to.
Stock suspension doesn't work well in the endless rocks, bumps, and corners of the desert. Waiting for new front rezzies for a late model 2005 Predator 500. Ordered a set of springs from Hygear in NY. Front triple rate and rear double rate with cross-over adjustment. This should be pretty decent without a revalve and dual rate adjust mod.
My reasoning is that if you can go 1 MPH faster in the rough, this is equal to about 30 MPH faster down the bomb.
Longer a-arms may be a good choice as the tire can travel more.
