The best thing to do would be to find a local track and go for practice nights. Most tracks will run practice nights 1 or 2 days a week to allow riders to come hit the track for a small fee. Talk to some guys and ask for advice. Like you said, you gotta start with the basics, gotta walk before you can run. For starters (and this may sound crazy) get a small grip strengthener and also a rope with the handle and 5 lb weight (for your forearms, remember football?). Your hand strength and forearms are going to be the very first thing that begin to tire when you race....it's brutal and physically demanding. This will definitely get you ready to handle 5 laps
Racing is an awesome sport and I am slowly getting back into it myself. Every rider is going to have a different opinion on how to turn/jump/etc., it's a matter of finding your riding style and getting comfortable on your machine while jumping and sliding turns (pulling in the clutch, locking up the rear break, then popping the clutch back, sometimes downshifting in the process). Sounds like you're machine is ready to go as is, definitely can handle the track. Good luck, a helmet and mx boots are a must!
