removing starter...trailblazer 250?

I have a 2001 Trailblazer 250 we just got. I checked everything out and the Starter is shot. I'm trying to get the damn thing out. I have the whole bike standing nose straight up in the air. That appeared to be the easiest way to take that bottom plate off the frame and the only way to gain access to the starter. Now, I Do have a repair manual for this, but it covers so many years it does not go into great detail on each model. It shows me the mounting bolts, but in the pic they have, its looks like the engine is out of the frame. In reality the rear of the starter is very tight up against the rear of the PVT case.
Does anyone know if I'm gonna have to take off the PVT front case, remove the Clutches, then remove the rear of the PVT case just to get this damn starter out? Help! any advice??

If memory serves, you'll need to take the rope pull case off to get to one of the bolts (very close to the flywheell),and the other two, that you get to underneath, you'll just need a quarter inch drive set or skinny ten mill. wrench. It's just tight on there. You'll deserve about three beers after you're done

I'm just wondering If after all the mounting bolts are off...will the starter kinda fall down through the hole on the frame, or will I need to reverse it out of the hole a bit before it drops down. right now there isn't much room to pull it back out of the casing. About 1 or 2mm at most. They make the easiest job hard by burying in the middle of the bike.

best way is remove pull rope cover and remove the two bolts that hold the starter, remove the belt and clutches and remove the two bolts holding the back side of the starter, its so much easier and faster to just remove the belt and cover to get at everything

Thanks, I thought I would have to take that route. Now I gotta find my old clutch puller I made. That's easier said than done.

everything is easier said than done my friend. one thing will always break, snap, strip, or just get plain stuck to make the easy jobs tough.
but anyway, I just ordered the starter off eBay. $42 including shipping. The Polaris people want like $285. I hope this aftermarket job does the trick. Waiting for warmer weather to put it in. It happens to be the same starter I need for my Scrambler 400. I'll fix the kids 250 first. if it works in his, I'll throw one in mine.

A place to buy a starter at a good price is dbelectricial.com

2008 Dodge Caliper
2010 Chevrolet Equinox
2004 Honda ForemanES 400 4x4
(Currently I don't own a Polaris but I work on them all the time and get to ride cutomers for test rides. Maybe soon I will be a Polaris owner.)

Yes , the starter works fine. the one I bought was
Starter Polaris Trailblazer 250 300 400 244 283 NEW - eBay (item 290407648776 end time Apr-22-11 20:43:09 PDT)
it used to be $43 the price just went up to $48

dbelectrical also sells starters on ebay and look exactly the same in the pics. The closest one I could find is this
NEW STARTER 95-02 POLARIS SCRAMBLER 400 2X4 4X4 - eBay (item 140486078786 end time May-02-11 12:01:48 PDT)
I know they are the same starter as the trailblazer 250, but I looked on their store and couldn't find it listed. check it out. Its a bit cheaper.
I know for a fact the 1st one I listed works great. I'm buying another.
