A fuel problem can result in backfiring. Also a backfire whle running can be caused by carbon in the exhaust. Mine's only done it a couple times when I first got it.

It doesn't backfire while running...it just doesn't start and backfires every 3 or 4 pulls

I had a problem with backfiring on my scrambler, and the culprit was a sticking throttle cable. Caused the electronic mechanism in the thumb throttle to short, thus causing the backfire. (this is a built in safety mechanism)

Check throttle level freeplay per the manual.
