Winch electrical question

Each time I turn key to on winch solenoid clicks. Is this correct ? Or should solenoid only click when you use winch ? Dealer installed winch, first solenoid was bad first time I needed to use it. Replaced solenoid wired it like dealer did. Used winch a few times. Now winch does not work again. Solenoid still clicks when key turned on. Have not check for power or continuity. Just want to make sure solenoid is wired properly. Thanks for the replies.

The solenoid will only click when it gets power. It should NOT get power until the trigger wire contacts a 12V source. IE the handlebar mounted toggle switch. If the solenoid is clicking just when hitting the starter the winch is either wired wrongly or have a crossed wire somewhere.

Get out your meter and start checking things...

How old and what brand of winch is this. The older Warn's use a solenoid wired to the key switch which would click when the key was turned on. The newer ones do not do this and are wired so the engagement is with the in/out switch not the key switch. If it is a newer winch you might have to get the install instructions and begin "fixing" what the dealer did.

I bought my Bombardier in 03 and at that time Warn was giving away new style solenoid contactors because of fire problems with the old style. Might be worth checking out.
