1993 Trailboss electrical issue

I have a 1993 Trailboss 350 4x4 here. 2 Stroke liquid cooled model, with PVT drive. I noticed my battery isnt charging. When I unplug the positive terminal, I lose all lights, winch, all electrical basically. Engine stays running however.

Also noticed that I can start the bike without turning the ignition on. I dont know what is going on... Ignition problem? Voltage regulator? How to test these? I dont have a service manual. Manuals here on this site arent listing my year, or model unfortunately

Well Thats about all for now, any replies would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

Thanks Bruce! !

Something I forgot to mention... The bike runs without the ignition set to ON, however the lights and electrical still shut off with the ignition set to OFF. Ignition off = no electrical, ignition on = electrical so long as battery is connected and charged. Tested with a volt meter, battery is not receiving a charge from the bike, and drains slowly when in use. If I disconnect the battery, the bike runs, but no lights, no power to winch, tail light, heck even the reverse light wont illuminate.

To kill the engine the magnito (wrong spelling I'm sure) needs to ground out so I would check for a bad ground wire. (broke, loose, or conection needs cleaned up)

First guess would be a bad ignition switch...but they are pretty hardy. My guess is that you may to end up with an electrical schematic of that unit trying to find out where someone messed with it. big mudder is right. the magneto is not grounding when you turn the ignition off start at the switch and work backward on the brown wire

test your voltage reg and charging system....all your electrical connections and grounds....use and ohm meter to double check your harness for broken wires...then try replacing the CDI Unit.....thats the point I'm at with my 97 Sportsman.
