1996 polaris sportsman 500. as you look from the side, where the pull start
is located, i have water leaking from where the housing for the pull start is bolted to the engine. i am not the brightest penny, but i dont think water is even supposed to be there. any thoughts.
Mechanical seal would be my first guess too. But, if it were the mech. seal, the water would leak out of the weep hole where the water pump cover mates up to the engine block. The hole is at the very bottom of the water pump cover. It's directly in front of the recoil cover so the water could very well be running down the case and dripping from the recoil cover. ----Fill up the radiator and resevoir, Clean area that the water has been dripping from, park ATV on clean concrete, start engine and let it get warm and eventually the water will begin to "weep" from the weep hole and drip onto the skid plate or ground. Also keep an eye out for pin holes anywhere on the radiator hoses that could leak as well.
I'm not sure how the older 500s look but my 08 500 has a drain plug on the bottom of the pull starter housing for draining water out of the housing that gets in through the rope hole on the top. If it is water (clear or maybe rusty) leaking out from between the block and the pull rope housing I would start by making sure the recoil housing isn't full of water. If it is leaking anti freeze(greenish) then look into a pump seal.
