Oil change 2011 Sportsman 500

Reading the owners manual about oil changes on my new 2011 Sportsman H.O. it say that after I change the oil and filter, fill with two Qts. oil, that I need to clamp off the line that runs from the oil tank to the pump, start the engine, let it run for about 20 seconds and release the clamp, and that I should hear a rush of air, if not, repeat the procedure.

Talking to others who own older machines, they never heard of such a thing.

What's up with this?

You only need to prime the pump if you remove the filter screen that goes from the reservoir to the oil pump. This "re-pressurizes" the system so to speak. BTW, it is not the hose from the reservoir to the pump that you clamp (that would be bad), it is the vent line with a 2 inch slit in it at the very top of the pump that runs to your airbox.

You only need a full 2 quarts if you empty the crankcase as well (I guess some people don't routinely do this since it's a bit of a pain in the balls but I didn't think it was too bad.) I empty everything, plus that crankcase collects all the debris at the bottom, so why not drain it. Hope this helps.

No problem, first change takes a little longer since it's all new. Did you see this video, it's pretty well representative of what it's like. Good luck.

After I change my oil I pinch the return line from the engine to the tank with my fingers and you should feel a pulse which is the oil returning to the tank. That way you know for sure that the system is properly primed. As stated above you only need to prime if you clean the pickup screen but I always check just to be safe.
