piston ring positions

hey all, just about ready to rebuild the top end of my 02 700 sportsman with new piston kits, cylinder block, and all new valve seals. i was told by a friend who did my other quad motor that he could do it for about $150ish give or take 50 bucks. hes been in and out of the hosptial so if i get stuck doing it im not paying a dealer 250bucks to do it. my only question is how do the rings on the pistons need to be positioned? a gap just every 1/3 around spaced evenly? and what do i need to do to prim the engine and oil for first start up? just need to buy the $280 engine block and oil yet. thanks you.
