Starting/Shifting Procedure for 1989 250 Trail Boss

I just aquired an 89 Trial boss and got her running and almost together - I have never owned this type of ATV with a Snowmobile Clutch Drive.
It is a 1989 2 wheel drive chain driven 250. I can start it in Netural and all the lights are now working she runs good and will rev up.
Question: What is the process for shifting I do not want to screw it up and have no owners manual.
(If someone has manual to Sell or Scan for me that would be great)Also- there is a little button near left switch for reverse? How does this work.
The shifter has a N-R-H (I think H=Forward)
I am really excited to ride this w/o shifting gears -it may be easier for my younger kids to drive.

FYI.. I have an extra engine, transmission, and complete frame less 1-frt. hub. I think it is a 1988 model if anyone interested.

Thanks in Advance

My wife's 2000 Trail Boss will start in any gear. But we usually use neutral.

D.W.B. is correct of coarse, H is of HIGH and that means FORWARD. N is for Neutral and R is for Reverse.

That lever is your choke. It is to help start on cold mornings.

Start it in Neutral, allow it to warm up and then get on a shift into H and depress the brake and as you release it, depress the thumb throttle and off you go!!

Be sure to get helmets and protective gear for them kids!

Have fun!

You can only shift in and out of gears when your rpm is at idle. If you try and shift when rpms are too high, your quad will remind you by letting out a nice grinding noise.

The "reverse" button your asking about is the " reverse override" button. If it works properly, when you run your quad in reverse without pushing it you rpms will cut out (safety), if you push and hold the button while going in reverse you can go full speed in reverse

Thanks- I know what the choke does and how to operate - and it is located near the key switch and works properly.

MOPAR-Thanks for the info on the little button- I had no idea how to use it. So do I push it as I put it in Reverse or after she is in gear?

I dont understand the comments on depressing the brake after it is in gear?

I was wondering if applying the brake is needed to put in gears?
Sounds like I just need to be sure the rear clutch is not moving and idle is low to shift.

Thanks again everyone...

Still looking for an owners manual to buy or if someone could scan for me.

The yello button on the left side handle bar is the rev overide button. For safetys sake the machine is wired to provide limited rpm and power when backing. If you need full power, first depress and hold button in.

I didn't mention the button, as you described lever looking thing next to key, (that's the choke on our 2000. Maybe your 1989 is different) not the yellow button on bars.

Check www. Babbitsonline.com for the Manuel.

I received the parts bike with the purchase of the 1989.
I was told it was an 1988 and came with engine and trans.
The engine is out and I know the recoil is missing- but I will have to see if it turns over.
I was concidering trying to put it back together for another running bike but way too much work so I may part it out.

Send me an email so I can get you some pictures in the next few days.
