poping noise
I have a 2010 sportsman 500 H.O that started making a wierd noise . I want to say almost like a popping noise only whenI turn left from the rear left tire. You can't hear it when driving straight or turning right or all . I changed both rear wheel bearings and the noise is still there! The boots are not ripped ,no tears, no grease leaking, clamps are on tight. Tires are not rubbing on any thing presure is at 7 psi running swamp lites. My bike has 400 miles on it. You can't hear the noise when driving the bike because the motor is to loud. I noticed when my wife was putting the bike away after I washed it. any ideas?

Had that on my Outlander. The problem was U-joint on rear driveshaft. To test it grab the shaft by hand on one end and shake it strongly left-right then up-down. If it has any free play on it, U-joint is bad. Do the same on the other end of the shaft. Do it on both, front and rear shaft, then repeat it on all axles.

anyone - I am having to same issue with my 03 sportsman 700. So you replaced bearings and that wasn't the issue? What have you done since then to fix the problem? I took all the ball bearings out of the hub assembly to clean and pack full of grease and place back in there hoping that was the issue. What should my next step be?

check your axles and your driveshafts for any play in the joints.

I had a popping coming from the rear of my 08 500. It only popped when I turned left. Nothing going straight or turning right. It was the left CV axle. Boot was good and full of grease. The joint was tight but it still popped. I would bet it is your CV axle.

thanks for the reply...I removed the carrier wheel bearing and inside there are 2 plastic bearing carriers (not sure of the term, looks like teeth) and pulled those out. One of which was missing about 6 of the teeth, could this be causing the popping noise? Also i am wondering what you mean by play in the joints? Everything seems to be tight and there isnt any noise when i move the half shaft or cv joint. I dont want to take the bands of the boots to be able to look inside if I dont have to. I am wondering if those plastic pieces arent keeping those ball bearings in the right position and when I turn left and put stress on the rear end thats when the noise occurs. Please let me know your thoughts and I appreciate all your help!

In your first post you said you changed the wheel bearings. I cant remember how many bearings mine had because I didn't mess with them so I looked on a blow up on Parts shark and could only find one bearing listed that went in the rear hub. If you took this out and it looks like some of the bearing race is missing then that could be the problem. But if you changed the bearings then I'm confused as to why a new bearing has part of the race broken. Is it possibly part 9 here PartShark.com - Motorcycle Parts, ATV Parts, UTV Parts, PWC Parts, Powersports Apparel, Motorcycle Accessories for OEM and Aftermarket.. It says that it needs 2 and looks like a flat washer but at closer look it might have teeth. If these hold the bearing in and they are broke then maybe that is your problem. I know the popping on mine stopped when I replaced the CV shaft. My CV joints moved freely and were tight and did not feel loose. The boots were intact and in good shape and I could not detect any popping when I moved the CV joints around with the axle off the bike but it definitely popped under load turning to the left when on the machine.

I have just pulled the bearings out to notice the bearings race (plastic rink with teeth) were damaged I have not put them back in as of yet. On your parts shark schematic it was not part 9 (clip ring) there was actually 2 different plastic rings inside 10 which was inside part 11, one of these which has failed.

The bearings are supposed to be sealed I thought. If they are visibly broken then at best this is your popping. At worse they needed fixing any way. Hopefully this is it. Good Luck
