2004 Sportsman 700 EFI Clutch Problem

I have a 04 700 sportsman efi. It is very hard to shift I usually have to shut the machine off to shift but at times it seems perfectly normal. It has a new polaris belt and I am curious if anyone knows what could be causing this or what it takes/costs to get it fixed?

two things pop to mind.

check shift linkage

check belt tension

does the machine want to move on its own if it is in gear with no throttle or brake?

then that really leads me to believe belt tension. you might be just on the edge of it being too tight were sometimes the primary is able to catch the belt enough at idle to grab it and make it spin, and sometimes it doesnt. im not saying belt tension is the answer but its something i would really look at given your problems. sadly, im a parts guy, so i have no knowledge how to do it. at this point i would have you talk with our service manager. get yourself a good service manual. you can get a clymers or a haynes for like $33 or even the OEM one but those are usually $50-$70. any of them should have pictures and detailes on how to do belt tension adjustment and other troubleshooting. if anything else comes to mind i will let you know
