Question 2004 sportsman 500ho electric start

My electric start isn't working on my 500ho, you hear a click but nothing happens, battery is charged, terminals tight...what would be my next place to look? I have not had much experience with 4 wheelers...thanks kwejs

hold old is the battery? have a shop preform a load test on the battery. it might be that the battery has the proper amount of volts so it shows fully charged but it cant hold the amps to start the machine. a simple load test will tell you if the battery is okay or not. its the easiest to check, so start there, takes like 15 seconds for a shop to do a load test. if it passes a load test then we can start troubleshooting from there

it is a new battery, it worked fine, doesn't get a lot of use, but now i have to rope start it...the click comes from just forward of the battery, didn't know if that is ?the starter or some other silonoid?

Clicking is the solenoid, that is normal. Try this: locate your starter, it's right under the carb. Tap on the starter with a wrench handle or something metal while pressing the start button. This may help the starter brushes make contact if they are getting worn and loosing connection. Possible you have starter problems.

thanks for the input...went out to try knocking on the starter, b4 i tried your suggestion i tried the starter and it worked...didn't do anything b4 or since??? could it be like a car starter and have a couple bald spots where no contact is being made? Appreciate all the advice, may have to breakdown and find a new starter or rebuild it...

Yes, you got it. That was the reason behind tapping on the starter, to jar it past a dead spot in the starter.

from everything you have described it sounds like you need a new brush kit. please dont go buy a new starter right off the bat, you will be wasting a lot of money.
