I need help!!!

I just had the top end of our 90 Trail boss 250 rebuilt. I started it up tonight for the first time and it started smoking really bad, ran for a couple of minutes and then died but now won't start. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Who rebuilt it? Was the oil injection operational?

Usually with a fresh top end, you leave the oil injection alone, and premix the fuel tank gas too. This is usually only for the first tank or two while the top end is new. This does create a lot of smoke, since there is so much oil with both the premix and the oil injection. This often causes fouled plugs.

Is it turning over at all?

I had a machine shop here in town do the work and then I reasembled. Yes, I did premix the gas and yes it is turning over great. What is the easiest way to tell if I am getting a good spark?

I have tested as much as I can and don't think I am getting spark to the plug. I have a test light and am getting a strong light from the fuse box to the CDI but then very little to no light from the CDI to the coil. Does this mean that the CDI is bad and not getting enough spark to the plug? Thanks in advance.

put a newplug in the thing! You cannot test the ignition system with a light tester. Put a plug in it then hold it to the motor. Or like bruce said hold onto it and turn the machine over trust me you will know if you have spark or not. Next replace your plug cap or test it but I take it you dont have a volt ohms tester.

I have put a new plug in it! And yes you can follow the current with a light to see where it ends but thanks for your help.

BMorton is right. You need an ohm meter to measure hw many ohms you are getting on each wire from the stator and the coil. You will need to get the specs and test with an ohm meter. You might be getting some voltage to the parts but it might not be enough. He and I are just trying to help. Did you ground the plug and push the start button to see if you have spark?

I do appreciate the help, just frustrated. Yes, I have worked on cars for 20 years but never atv's and am I sure I'm not getting spark to the plug but wanted to narrow down the issue to coil or CDI.
