1994 400L repairs

New here, I have a 1994 400L (bought new) with 8,900 miles. The front sproket finally gave out and needs replaced. Is there a link to an easy manner to change both chains and full set of sprockets? Also it no longer goes into high range and reverse. In adjusting the rods I can get one but not both. Anyone have ideas? Using low range and reverse for now. Machine is mostly used for plowing and log skidding. Thanks.

there are actually 3 chains and 6 sprockets an no its not easy, you should get a manual it will explain it, to adjust shifting rods, put tranny in nuetral, remove rod ends from shifter and tranny, adjust rod ends so they go into holes on tranny and shifter perfectly straight, make sure rod ends arent worn out, if they are you will have to replace them

3 chains and 6 sprockets on the front? Now I'm really confused, I only see 2 chains and 4 sprockets. There are 2 sprockets and 1 chain on the rear axle, those seem to last about 2,000 to 2,500 miles. What I was looking for - was if anyone had any helpful tips or cautions beside what is in the shop manual. Thanks.

I would also advise you to buy a manual. There are a total of 3 chains and 6 sprockets on your machine. 4 sprockets and 2 chains for the front wheel drive. You will have to loosen both the front and center concentrics all the way in order to get your new chains on. If you have never done that before it is too complicated to explain without having a manual in front of you.

Also if your rod ends are good and the linkage is adjusted properly you most likely need a shift fork replaced. Especially with that many miles and alot of plowing snow! All the more reason for you to buy a manual!

Thanks guys, I have a manual. I was just wondering if there were any shortcuts or tips. Will just follow what the book says. The shifter problem turned out to be in the linkage at the bottom of the lever (in the black box) not at the shifft rods or shift forks.
