Clicking Noise In Reverse?

I have a 2005 Sportsman 700 that when in reverse it makes a clicking noise. I'm thinking that it's probably a driveshaft but was wandering why it would only do it in reverse. I have jacked the bike up and tried finding which one it might be but it will not make the noise when it's off the ground.

Also the two front driveshafts have a lot of play where they go into the front gearbox, is this normal for Polaris? I have had the front driveshafts out and the front gearbox all apart recently for work and everything looked good.

There is some play with the axles in the the differentials. No big deal unless it is totally just sloppy all over the place. As far as the axle popping goes, sometimes when the joint is not completely broken they will pop in reverse or when you turn, but not when going straight. Just has to do with how the load is applied to them. Have someone else drive it in reverse and you look at the axles. If it is popping you should be able to see which joint is moving slightly.

I had this in my previous ride, CanAm. Even if I pushed it backwards in the straight line, I could hear the clicking with engine off. I looked arround very well and found on the rear driveshaft one of U-joints that had some free play. Changed it and noise was gone.

My rear joints do have a little play. Maybe I will start there and see if that helps. Thanks Guys!

Let me put it this way:
when I found a little play in one of joints, I said to my friends I didn't want to bother with it, I can live with that clicking, I didn't want to do anything. But they all jumped (much more experienced owners of many brands) and said I was crazy, it's not something to play with, it'll only get worse and if it brakes (and it will), the damage would be exremely expensive. They scared me and I changed U-joint straight away.
So, even if those U-joints, with some free play you talk about, aren't source of your clicking noise, they need replacement.
