Polaris 425 Problems

Hello all my name is Joshua, and i recently picked up a 1996 polaris 425 Magnum 4x4..The man i got it from said the carb needed cleaned so i took it off and cleaned it,so heres my PROBLEM,the quad starts fine, idles good, seems to have all kinds of power, but when i take off and get up to about 10-15 mph it BOGS down on me and when i let off its fine,if i disconnect the air box from the carb i dont have this problem, and also the battery is dead on it and the fuel pump is not hooked up,the gas line is ran straight from the TANK to the CARB..Any help would be Appreciated, and if you need to know more i will try my best to explain every thing to you,,Thx

Have you replaced the air filter? I would bet it is either #1 dirty, or, #2 if it is foam (and old), they can get old and basically disintegrate (and the foam becomes closed cell instead of open cell).

My ATV-GURU bumpers ARE FOR SALE, front and rear, BRAND NEW. Me a reasonable offer and they are YOURS.

(As you probably already know, they are currently unavailable from TheAtvSuperstore.com /ATV-Guru for an undisclosed amount of time).

No, but there is no air filter on it thats why i cant understand why it does better if i disconnect the air box from the carb,i have read many threads on my problem, and i have seen where the cam lobes could be wore and im hoping thats not it,it has all kinds of power and if it was the cam lobes bad it looks like it would act up with/with out the air box,but i disconnect the air box it runs fine like nothings wrong at all..

Man, sorry I have nothing else to suggest. I hope you are able to get it figured out. I have heard many times that the 325's will not run correctly without the airbox lid on (something to do with the crankcase vent/vacuum pressure, etc). I hope you are able to get it figured out quickly.

Me to man and thx for trying to help,im really hoping its not the cam lobes, with 4 kids it makes it hard to replace expensive parts on 1,and if thats the case i will more than likely end up parting it out and Im not going to like that 1 bit.

Make sure you dont have an air leak at the intake manifold where it bolts to the head. Also make sure you have correctly reassembled the carb.

air box lid has to be on to run right. sounds like buttons in secondary clutch are worn out, you say it takes off and runs good to 10-15 mph then bogs, thats when secondary should open up, take rear clutch off, turn upside down and remove snap ring, under a little pressure but not much, see if 3 buttons under helix are shot, if so replace them, have to turn helix 1/3 of a turn to wind spring, need spring in #1 on clutch and #2 on helix, it will make more sense after you take it apart and I will help you

Also my fuel pump is not connected to the tank or carb will that have any affect on the way it runs while riding it? and my 2 air vent lines on the carb are ran into the frame instead of running up to the highest point..Will any of these 2 have any affect on how it runs?

your fuel pump must be connected or you are just starving the motor of fuel. it cannot wind up even out of gear for lack of fuel. fuel pumps are cheap at around 22.00, but like most will say that is not something that usually goes bad.
