Welcome to the forum. I had a 2001 Sportsman 400 which is similiar to a 500. It didn't have a ground cable from starter to battery. Not sure what you are talking about. Can you post a pic?

The negitive(-) cable and ground cable are the same. The positive(+) cable or hot(red) cable should be the only cable hooking to the starter. If there is anyway you can post a pic it would help alot.
Thanks
