too many donuts are bad for your speedo

Hello all,

The refference is not in regards to bannana hammocks, but the speedometer unit on my 2004 sportsman 400. My son rolled it while doing donuts in the snow, smashed the speedo, and got snow ilnto it. I know that I will need to get a new speedo, but the snow melted inside the speedo and I noticed a burnt electric odor, and now the quad is completely dead and will not even start with the pull start.

So my question is this - Will replacing the speedo make the quad power on, or is there something else in the electrical system that will need to be replaced? I would not want to plug a new speedo in to have it get shorted as a result of another issue that I do not know about.

p.s. My son is fine other than a wounded ego and the fact that he is banned from the quad until May.

It *may* fix it. What you need to do is pull the plastic in the pod off and look for any burnt wires or any wired ripped off of their original component. Check all your fuses, and then if all checks out replace the speedo. If that doesn't work then you have a short circuit somewhere else that needs to be diagnosed with a voltmeter. test each connection, make sure the ones that are supposed to have power, have it, and the ones that aren't supposed to, don't.
If that doesnt work, check the revers ends of the wires, meaning the ones that come from the pod and go somewhere else. check the other end to make sure its still connected.
ALSO! check your ground wire.

Best of luck! Glad to hear your boys ok!
