Clutch?

I am fairly new to ATVs. Just bought my 2011 polaris sportsman 500 ho about 6 to 9 months ago. Since then, I like to play in the mud and water, I have installed 27" mud lights, wheel spacers and a snorkel kit. I have gone through one belt in under 50 hours but I know I have done somethings wrong like idling in drive. However, the bike is much more difficult to start moving than with stock items and if im on a root or something and Im in high gear, I start burning the belt untill I put it in low or give it a larger amount of gas in high gear to get off it. I am starting to use low gear more often but wonder what I can do to get a little more low end torque in high gear. I need something to get me moving better then things go fine. Really a huge pain to go into low gear to get over a stump then stop and shift into high gear. Im not real familuar with clutches or really what they do but someone mentioned that may be a fix. If so, how does it work, what kind do I get and how difficult is it to install? Thanks in advance for any information that I can get.

Sounds like you could use a clutch upgrade/kit, I'd start shopping around. I would call a few companies a call and see what they suggest for your needs. You may need only a primary spring change, or you may need a whole kit. If you like to play in the mud then it will be worth the expense.

The kits are pretty easy to install if you are mechanically inclined, just need a few tools especially a good pair of snap ring pliers if you have to change the secondary spring out. I actually went with EPI because they have a comprehensive video series on youtube that details the installation. Good luck.

Call Quad Shop Customs and talk with Adam. He will hook you up with what you need for your clutch based on your tires and riding style. Very easy to install as well. And just a tip/note, you should use low gear whenever riding in mud/water, or when pushing/pulling. It will save your belt.
