Sloppy Chain

I picked up a 2000 Polaris Xplorer 250 4x4 and the chain is very sloppy. Is there anyway to tighten that up or is it known for these to have sloppy chains, cause thats what ive been hearing.

Thanks.

The chain can be tightened. If your's is like my xplorer there are 3 chains. The rear chain is tightened by loosening the two bolts that hold on the hitch, then there is a hole in the sprocket near the axle. Insert a screwdriver in this hole to where it aligns with the hole in the hub. Now push the fourwheeler forward and the hub will turn and the chain will tighten. Don't go to tight or the chain will stretch when the suspension compresses. The middle chain is on the right side of the machine along side of the motor and that tensioner is on the front sprocket and tightened the same way. The chain going to the front wheels has the tensioner on the front sprocket as well. There is a bolt under the front diff to loosen to make adjustment, which is done the same as the other chains. Sounds harder than it really is.

I'll also add that all chains will stretch. They have their fatigue point, where adjusting doesn't work anymore, and the chain needs to be replaced at some point.

That is not a polaris fault. That is a "every machine that is chain driven" fault.

The idea that all machines like this have sloppy chains is a maintenance issue, not a machine fault. Along the same lines as "all sportsmans have dirty oil". Its maintenance related, not a quirk of the machine.

Adjust your chain when the suspension is compressed or you will do damage going over bumps. You will find as you compress your suspention the chain will tighen up
