Error code 651 4

I have a 2009 Polaris 850XP with 3K-miles that has been nothing but trouble!!!!!

Here is my newest problem:

The bike shuts off while riding. The engine dies and I get error code 651 4. Manual says it is Injector 1 (MAG) (SDI PART LOAD) Driver Circuit Grounded.

Can anyone tell me which injector is injector 1? What does "Driver Circuit Grounded" mean?

Any help fixing my latest issue will be greatly appreciated.

The best help comes from this forum.

Thanks in advance to anyone with advise.

First of all, injector 1(MAG) on a Polaris twin refers to the cylinder on the magneto side of the engine. Injector 2(PTO) is the transmission/clutch side of the engine. The driver circuit for injector 1 is the white w/black tracer wire from the injector connector to the ECM. The wire itself could be shorted to ground, or there could be an ECM internal failure(not likely but it does happen). Can you give me any other symptoms & how you were riding when the failure happened?

I was ridding around 7-10 MPH when the ATV just quit. It did not want to start back and took about ten-minutes before it would start. We rode about 6-miles and in that distance the bike quit a total of 4-times.

It runs great, no lack of power, then all of a sudden the motor dies. The engine icon comes on but the code 651-4 does not appear until I attempt to re-start the bike.

I have checked the wiring to both injectors and both appear to be fine. I rode the bike today and it died only once but took about 10-minutes before it would crank again. Again 651-4 appeared while trying to start the bike. AFter it re-started the bike ran fine the rest of the day.

I need to figure out what is causing this before I'm stranded 20-miles from the truck.

Also, with the 850XP having the PTO in the rear, which injector is going to be injector one? I'm not sure but I think the magneto is also at the rear of the engine. The XP's engines sit sideways compared to the non XP's.

Thanks again for any and all help.

1st, your magneto is on the front of the engine underneath the water pump. This means the front cylinder is number 1.
Now, at this point, when the trouble occurs, I'm checking for an injector pulse signal, verification of spark, & proper fuel pressure. The results of these checks will point me in a direction of wiring, ECM, or fuel pump. Of these, the easiest to rule out is fuel pressure. The reason I'm bringing up fuel pressure is, other than the DTC, all the other symptoms fit for this failure. And, fuel pumps doing this is not an uncommon problem. The fuel rail test port is under the seat. It has what looks like a tire valve cap on it. Put your fuel pressure tester here. You should have 40 psi when you turn your key on. Next, unplug your fuel pump for the following checks. You'll be cranking the engine for the tests. Check for injector pulse with a "noid" light. These plug onto the injector connector & flash when the pulse is present. They're inexpensive & available at most parts stores. You'll need the one for the Bosch style connector. Then verify that spark is present on number 1. If you find problems with either pulse or spark, I'm afraid it's probably time for a trip to the dealer service dept. Please let me know what you find, & if I can help with any other questions.

Thanks you

I'll check the items you listed and I will let you know what I find.

I actually rode the bike all day yesterday and again all day today. ABsolutely no problems. I'm hoping it was just a glitch.

At this point I should point out I have had trouble in the past with the wiring harness at the relay/fuse block. For some unknown reason the positive side of the starter solenoid relay and fan relay were not getting positive voltage. I had to run a positive wire from the main battery input terminal to both the starter and fan relays in the relay/fuse box. I been told this is a common problem with the early 850XP. I have not had any further problems with the fan or started getting voltage. I'm passing this on as I am hoping my current problem is an electrical issue.

However, I will check the fuel pump, injectors, and hope its not the ECU.

Again, I thank you for all your help and I will give you an update when I have a chance to figure it out.
