Gear selector won't come out of neutral

I have a 99 sportsman 500 that has been sitting for some time. I can not get it to shift into gear. I removed the linkage from the shift box and still have the problem.

if mine won't shift into gear I slightly roll it forward and reverse then it pops right into gear.

With the linkage removed from the gear box, would the gear selector be free to move from high to low to reverse?

so the shifter wont shift with linkage removed? shifter needs taken apart, cleaned and re oiled.
Or tranny wont shift with linkage removed? try some channel locks on lever on top of tranny, shifting dogs bad or something broken inside tranny

Thanks for the input Russ C. I took it off and tried to get it apart but after soaking it in varius solutions i could not get the glides to break free. Solution was to order a new gear selector box. lesson learned not to let it sit idle for long periods of time.
