Sorry about the model, I have a 05 sportsman 700. I got the transmission out and tore apart somewhat. Everything inside looks good, the silent chain does have some play. Does this chain stretch over time and cause the grinding noise in reverse?
Also my drive chain has some play in it. I'm sure they need some play to operate smoothly but i wander if I should replace it also?

put your gear back inside the tranny and spin secondary clutch shaft going to your tranny
and turn it a bunch of times while being engaged in reverse by manual putting there then spin it you should be able to see the chain slip

Well I got the transmission apart and found my problem I do believe. One of the sprockets that the silent chain rides on had the roller bearing completely gone from the sprocket. Also found the drive chain in the bottom has been rubbing on the bottom of the case. Guess I will be replacing both chains now. Just hope I can put all these gears and bearings back together.

Yup I currently have my tranny split in my basement now the small chain was extremely loose like I think the only thing holding it in place was gravity and the drive chain was stretched pretty bad too the adjuster was maxed and and I could just about get it off the sprockets without even pushing the adjuster back in. Mines a 96 by the way.
Found the chains online the drive for about 70 and the small one for about 40 will be ordering them probably tomorrow.

I ordered my chains and other parts online from hit-the-gas parts.com My chains were $33 and $37 not sure what model you have but they may be cheaper from there. I was able to get all the bearings from my local John Deere store. Wife works there so I get a discount thank goodness.

its very common from what i heard too i also heard the number one reason is dont change tranny oil every 100-200 hours and people dont stop or come to a complete stop when changing gears and to save even more to not damage parts is to hit the brakes when switching they only one thing i know works though is shifting in a complete stop and using brake to make sure u stop completely any one have any imput that proves the tranny oil theory.

Hey guys i have a 1998 Magnum 425. I have been riding it for a few days now, bought it and had to clean carb etc. It shifts into forward and low no problem. It also shift fine into reverse. When I go to drive in reverse it starts to stutter a little. Is this the same thing? How hard is the repair for the silent chain on a 98 Magnum.
Thanks for the feedback.
