Grinds In Reverse Really Bad??

Just bought a 2000 Xplorer 400 4x4. Ran good and didnt grind when I bought it. Now finally after a lot of work I started and ran today and when I put it in reverse It grinds and sputters backward, didnt do this when I bought it but he mentioned that it did maybe I got lucky when I test drove it at his house. What causes the grinding and how do I fix it! Im close to getting this thing done and this is one of the last things..

Adjust idle speed to spec. , then try it. If it still does it ,remove clutch housing and blow out front clutch with compressed air, they do get full of dirt thru the years, and this cleaning help the clutch release the belt.
Missing in reverse ,there is a yellow reverse overide switch on the left handlebar, which needs pushed in ,while in reverse, it's a safety switch.

It drives fine in high and neutral it revs fine. The things I know is that the drive belt is new but has 2.5-3 inches of up and down play. And the gear shifter and linkage is new and it is Kind of Messed up there's some play in it, the guy said it grinds in reverse cuz he didn't adjust linkage but when I drove it it rode fine in reverse. I'll try the switch. Could it be the linkage?

to adjust linkage, put tranny in nuetral, remove rod ends from shifter , adjust rod ends so they go into shifter and tranny perfectly straight, also see if they are worn , may need to replace rod ends

it doesnt grind when shifting into reverse. It grinds when trying to drive in reverse. Still think it could be the linkage? I really hope its the linkage or tranny oil. Im going to drain and refill tranny oil and adjust linkage today. Any input is always greatly appreciated.
