carb overflow

can the carb randomly stuck float cause the ATV to backfire? my sportsman 500 ho 2001 starts right up and run fine through the RPMs and only backfires when I see gas coming from the overflow and it get shut off and started back up. it has been break the keyway when it backfires bad
