My 04 700 does the exact same thing. Mine started doing it a few years ago but it was only occasionally. Now the rear wheels barely spin before the front locks up. It will stay locked unless I back up. Ive changed the oil numerous times to no avail. Ive gone as far as giving parts numbers to the local John Deere dealer to get prices and make sure they can get the parts but I haven't bought them yet because I just haven't been able to bring my self to attempt tearing the front end apart. (how tough was that) Let us know what worked for you. Thanks

Howdy, the coil reads 25.2 ohms, after playing with it on the bench, it seems unlikely that the small bit of drag caused by the slight magnetizm could cause any issue. I mostly assembled it, and rotated by hand and could feel nor see any drag. I plugged the coil in, switched to 4wd, and all seems good, you can actually hear the coil excite the plate, and "grab" onto the cage.
Its a bit of a mystery, all the parts show such little sign of wear, I was hoping to find a big old chunk of metal disstorted or broken! (its probably a good thing I didnt!!)

for $10 dollars I would see if john deer deler has an armature plate and try it, otherwise, I dont know why coil is stayin magnetized, when you shut the switch ioff, does all voltage to coil drop?, when diff is un pluged is coil still magnetized?

The coil, for what ever reason, has a slight magnetic charge to it when de-energized (unplugged and on the bench) I will order a new armature, springs, and a seal kit and give a try.

It may be fine if cleaned good and reassembled with fresh demand drive fluid and a new plate...good luck and let us know how it turns out.

It isnt too bad, mostly tedious. the lower parts of the bumper, radiator, ball joints, a-arms (may not have needed to move the struts, but I wanted more room) the problem I had was trying to get the rolled pin out of front yolk-input shaft, what I ended up doing was removing the the input shaft and pinion from the front gearcase and leaving that in the wheeler. The gear case is pretty simple, just remember what order things came apart in.
Give it a try!

I have to wait until spring so that I can move some stuff out of my shop so I have room to tear it down and wait for parts. Two week ends ago it was 58 below and I have to park my Bronco in my shop or I cant drive it. I will be watching to see what it takes to fix yours and I will tear mine down when it warms up. Thanks
