2004 700 Sportsman Hilliard clutch, help please!!

Hey guys, this fall my 700 sportsman started locking into 4wd all by itself, it started out doing it infrequently, now with snow on the ground it is happening more frequent. I changed the oil and installed the correct amount of fluid-5oz. and still no change.

Today I removed the front gearcase, disassembled, cleaned, and looked for wear. The clutch mechanism shows alot less wear than I expected to find, no broken parts, gouge's, hot spots, ect.
I plugged the coil into the machine to check the "pull" on the armature, seems o.k. and the coil has an ohm reading of 26 ohms.

What can cause it to come and go into 4wd as it pleases? (with the switch in 2wd)
What parts should I throw at it while its apart?

if rollers are free and cage isnt cracked, replace the armature plate, they can get magnetized and cause your problem, not too expensive to try

I just replaced the cage, springs, rollers and armature plate on my 800 with John Deere parts at about 1/4 the cost of Polaris parts. It works better now than it ever has since I bought the machine....smooth as silk. If your cage shows no wear, cracks or rough spots I'd probably go with at least springs, rollers and armature plate while you have it out and apart. My rollers looked ok but I thought I could feel a very slight shoulder on the ends of them. It could have been my imagination and I didn't measure them since I already had new ones lying on the bench I put them in anyway. I actually found a couple of springs with an ear broken off making it stay engaged all the time. Feels like I have power steering now.

Thanks for the replies, I may have found the issue: the coil is staying slightly magnetized, even on the bench. The armature plate appears to have held no charge, only the coil.

If that is the problem, its WAY too expensive to replace!

I doubt the coil being a little magnetized matters so long as it ohms out at between 24-26 ohms although I didn't check mine on the bench.
