Sportsman 850XP With Oil In Air Box

My 2011 850XP is currently at the dealer having this problem resolved. They advised that they have seen this problem before, yet no one really complained. Also, the machines with copious amounts of oil had been in obvious rollovers, so no actual problem had been diagnosed.

My complaint, along with all the information found on this very forum guided them to this issue. They had in fact been sent a tech tip of some sort, but Polaris had not emphasized the issue strongly enough in it's wording to make the dealer take note.

My machines airbox was only slightly dampened by this issue, and always ran like a champ. I'd like to thank everyone's advice on this great forum who taught both myself and my dealer about this as well as all the other information about enjoying my ATV to the fullest.

This is a great forum because of the great people in it!

Thank you!

Patrick

I've got 420kms on the bike, and I believe around the mid twenties for hours. Purchased new in July 2011.

Well, my baby girl is out of the hospital. The repairs were covered by warranty, but my copy of the bill shows $74.10 for parts, $297.00 for labor, and $18.56 in taxes for a total of $389.66 Canadian.

They replaced part number 2204755 as per the Polaris Tech Tip.

My mileage according to the work order at time of repair is 416kms @ 33.1hrs.

Attached please find the highlighted part which was replaced.

Did that solve your problem? Have you looked in your air box to see?

I clocked another 100kms over the past weekend at high speeds across a frozen lake and no oil.

'11 Sportsman 850 LE Touring with oil in the Airbox

All,

Here are some pictures of what I just experienced. After riding this past Saturday with smoke (blue in color) towards the end of the run and reading throughout this forum my first thought was to check the air box and here are the results of that check... I will add that I had stuck a rag in prior to taking the first picture.

I will keep you all updated as to this fixing the problem. Thanks to all for the information posted, I would not have had a clue without this forum...

Welcome to the club. I didn't quite have that much oil in mine but my air filter was soaked with oil. Here are a couple of more threads that I hope have the solution in it. I ordered all 2012 parts so we will see.
Does that one pic show a K&N filter? I don't think I would put that in till its fixed. Wouldn't want to ruin a $50 filter.

Yes, when I purchased my wheeler I had them add it in, I was in the cleaning phase of the filter when I snapped that picture of the felt. The filter seemed unharmed so it is going back and if the problem is not solved then I am going to the dealer to pitch a bitch and have them replace it with another... We will see where this possible fix takes it, more to follow next weekend.
