over heating

well guys, i have a 99 magnum 500 and i started haviing a problem last year..i was driving down a road when my fourwheeler backfired and shut off..i got off to look at the problem and i noticed coolant spilling out..i noticed the hose came off goin to the rad..so i towed it home..not sure what would cause this? the dealer said that it was building pressure to blow a hose, so they changed the cap on the overflow..but now my bike is over heating..never over heated before this..i can run down a road doin 80km/h and not over heat but once i slow down and stop the light will come on or if im goin slow it will come on and go off when i speed up...i checked the fan by puting direct 12 volt power to it and it works..so what would cause this? rad so dirty its not getting enough air through it at low speeds? thats what im thinking but could use some feedback before i tear it apart..thanks

Eventhough ur fan works is it coming on when ur coolant reaches temp.? Def. chk. The rad. for caked on mud. Another possible problem could be to high a ratio of anti freeze to water.

there is times the light is on and the fan is..but there is also times the light is on and the fan isnt..so does this mean the fan relay is acting up or gone?

if ur bike is getting hot or over heating and the fan intermittently comes on during these situations then most likely ur fan relay is going to have to be replaced.

My fan wasn't working all the time when called for, it turned out to be the ECM. But if your fan is running and you are overheating I'd start with cleaning the rad out. Make sure the thermostat is working, check the temp sensor and relay.

Check the thermostat!!! It's just like a car! But the ECM thing is new to me,I'd check into that also.
