09 850 XP Power steering quits working....

Hey all, Iíve got a 2009 Polaris 850 XP EPS. Just the other day started having power steering problems. after a few mins of riding the power steering quits and the light comes on. Turn the key off and back on will work for another few mins and do the same. The time frame is different sometimes it will go for 15 mins... sometimes 3 or 4 mins. The dealer has it right now said their fancy coder reader on it says the voltages are screwy and it needs a new power steering box..... at almost $1800 for them to do it ouch...... I can find a new box online for $960 but I was hoping maybe its something else? Maybe a re-flash? I checked connections and re-greased at the power steering box looked good. I read something on here about maybe a relay that gets corroded? Where is that and could that be the problem? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Preston

Thanks Bruce, hoping all the knowledge of the members here will be able to give me some insight to my problems. I've been pretty happy with my XP but the whole expense to the power steering box is just more than I want to accept for the moment.

Usually the power steering has been bulletproof on these machines. I have encountered problems similar to yours at my dealership and have found that a reflash has cured them. Make sure your dealership tech reflashes properly....the proper reflash for power steering is the EPAS, NOT the ECM! Make them try a reflash first, if that fails you likely have a power steering unit failure, although I doubt it! Hopes this helps!

Well a little update on my quad. I havn't but put maybe 5 miles on it since the dealer did the reflash the day I took it in and so far so good. I still have the 2 inches of play in the steering that is in the steering box that Polaris says is normal. But I had already ordered the new steering box for my bike but won't be here till next week so havn't decided if i'll put it on or not. Have a big trip coming up in a week if I leave the current box on that will be the test. Just can't figure out what they changed in the steering boxes. The one I ordered is an updated part number compared to mine. So since I already bought it should I put it on or save the $965 bucks and send it back and deal with the play in mine and possibly setting the codes again.......

Here is the code the dealer noted on my paper work. Code C1065 is a failed unit = replace it. Is how it was documented in their notes.

Another update. The reflash didn't hold up went for a 1/2 hour ride tonight. Set code on the quad 520228. If anyone knows what that is. I guess I'll be putting on that power steering box after all.

assuming that your front end is all good, tie rod ends and ball joints etc, the 2 inch play in the steering is not the power steering box as it has a solid shaft going through the box. the play that develops is on the lower steering post where it splines to the lower portion of the ps shaft. i had the same trouble with loose steering and now my steering is tighter than a new 850. just pull it apart and drill and tap some knurled ended set screws into the lower steering post to lock the splines together, red locktite on the screws. there is a thread on the forum somewhere that has pics to explain this. this lower steering post takes most of the brunt from the anti kickback steering. search play in eps box. I have 500 km on my machine since i added these set bolts and steering is still tighter than a new xp, you couldn't have tighter steering. im in alberta canada and we ride the roughest mountain trails we can find. this is a really good test for these set bolts and they work perfect and take a beating. Theres nothing like having lunch at 8000 ft, although even brand new machines have troubles at this elevation running properly.
