Polaris 850 XP EPS system disassembly

Well the power steering or EPS quit working in my 09 850 XP and decided to take it apart so you can see what you get for $1000 bucks when your extended warranty won't cover it.

Here we are splitting the case.

You have a circuit board etc.

I believe this is what tells the power steering motor what direction your turning.

The solid shaft and plastic gear.

The shaft gear and screw gear removed.

The rubber dampener for the screw gear I believe.

Time for the electric motor.

Not much to it.

Well there you have it, not much to them for the money but I'll agree they are not very serviceable. I was surprised that the unit is sealed pretty good not any dust or moisture in it that I could find. Just a lot of money for this little luxury.

What company was your extended warranty through and what was their reason for not covering it?

That full disassembly with pics was great. Do you really know why it quit. I didn't see any burnt circuit boards (although I didn't realize that was in there). I take it that yours was replaced and you got to tear your old one apart?????

It was Cycle Max, National auto care corporation. They said that my extended warranty is part specific. They listed everything that was covered but power steering box was not one of them. Also I think it has to do a lot with the dealer you use as well. The good dealers know how to talk to these people and can sometimes get things covered that aren't supposed to be covered. But once a dealer tries to get it covered and doesn't succeed then trying to go to another dealer won't work either cause there already been a denied claim. So make sure your warranty covers power steering!!!!

I was surprised as well to find the plastic gear but this bike has 1900 miles and that gear shows no sign of wear. I'm not sure how its held onto the shaft I put it in my vice and hit it with a BFH and was unable to break it free from the shaft. So I'll give them credit on that its tough.

I still don't know why the motor was acting up. I'm sure it has something to do with a sensor of some sort. But everything inside of it looked good, no real signs of dirt or moisture inside. And as far as replacement went, Yes I ordered my replacement on-line. My dealer wanted $1200 for just the box and another $500 to change it out. I bought my new box on-line for $982 Shipped. It will be here tomorrow and since there is no core I couldn't find a post that had pics of a disassembled box I decided I'd show everyone what it consisted of and maybe some aftermarket company will see this post and build their own to compete with the crazy cost of the one globe motors builds for Polaris.

From what I see in pics 4 and 5 looks like there has been some moisture in it. Have you tried drying it well and reassemble to see if it will work? What exactly was it doing when it want bad? Did it just stop working or was it acting up?

Sorry for your issue, but thanks for posting, I was wondering what it looked like inside.

Interesting pics.

How does it handle without the EPS operating? Was it just like a non-EPS model?
