Electrical Problem - 2004 Sportsman 700
Well, I have a problem that I just don't have enough knowledge to solve and I think that I caused it, and I am desperate after spending countless hours trying to fix it. I will try to write all of the information that I have.
I have a late 2004 Sportsman 700 non-EFI. I was trying to override the speed limiting button that has to be pushed when going in reverse. As well, I was wiring it so that when the high-beams (lights) were on, the low-beams would come on also.
I am 99% sure the lights are fine, but I did find out that the speed limiting button was wired up incorrectly. I accidentally*wired up the relay to one side of the switch and one side to the fuel sending unit. I pulled the relay out, so I don't know if the fuel sending unit was getting a ground or +12V.
When I started using the quad after wiring it up, it was running rough (I thought it was because of the cold and the carb). I used it for a while and then put it away knowing something was wrong. I also noticed that the gas gauge on the spedo was wrong.
I know I wried it up wrong because I bought a manual and have a complete wiring schematic. It now will start sometimes, but it runs for just a while, it is really rough, it backfires, and a lot of exhaust (maybe white exhaust).
I can start it without the spedo hooked up, so I assume that that isn't the problem. The only other piece of electronics that I see is the CDI. I don't know if that was messed up and how it could have, unless the spedo was sending the CDI some power that messed it up.
My questions are, does the coil fire both cylinders at the same time? I am more knowledgeable about small tractor engines, and some of them do that on the twins.
Any suggestions on what could be wrong? I am very electrically inclined and I can work on this, I just don't know what the problem would be. I don't really want to take it to a dealer as I fix everything else of mine.
Any help would be appreciated.
