98/99 400 Explorer project...

New to the site here,
I have a buddy who asked me to get his quad running for him. Its a 98 or 99 Poo 400 Xplorer, I just picked it up this morning. He claims it has low compression, so Im going to dive right into the topend. I figured I should tear apart and clean the carb, if needed I can do a rebuild on it to. This will be my first 4x4 quad project. Is there anything else I should look for or any heads up on this quad? Body looks interesting to take off...just pull type or is it bolts holding it all together? Thanks for any sugestions. I will keep everyone up to date on this project, hope to start tonight after work.

I have always owned Poo sleds, 00 600 Touring, 98 XC 700, 00 XC 600 SP, 97 Indy 500, 97 Trail very happy and no problems. Just got into the quads last year...bought a use Banshee and tore it completely apart and cleaned/replaced everything. So I am no stranger in the garage. All about speed and go fast.

OK first thing first...

Xplorer sorry noticed that last night while looking the quad over.

So this thing looks like its been through hell and back, carb has about an inch of salt on it and yeah I could go on for an hour. So I just needed to know if this thing has compression or even try to start. Took old battery off, stuck the John Deere battery on her and we have power, lights work and she was trying to kick over. Pulled the air cover off and the carb boot is ripped, it feels like it has compression. Brand new plug in it and it wasnt even wet. So next step is take the carb off and rebuild it, it doesnt seem to be getting any fuel.

Looks like a fun quad to take out to the mud pits. Hope its just a plugged up carb and not the topend. I will keep everyone post on whats going on.

Ok did some more work on this beast last night...

First thing I found was the fuel filter was pluged,
Air filter....was black
Air box was cracked at the boot
Reed intake had never been off before, so once I got that off this is what I found.

So I showed the owner and he doesnt really have the money right now for the topend and to go any further, so looks like this little project is on hold for a while.
