Test For Spark

I am working on a 96 Sportsman 500 and I am having some trouble with the motor not firing. I checked to make sure I was getting gas all the way to the carb and I am. Air is no problem, but how do I check if I am getting any spark from the spark plug? Sorry if this is a stupid question.

lay the plug on the motor with it plugged up and turn the motor over and see if you see any spark coming from the end of the plug

So I am not getting any spark what so ever to the cyclinder chamber. Took off the flywheel to check out the stator and two of the magnest where in pieces. Can I get away with just replacing the magnets or am I going to have to replace the stator as well?

I went and talked to my local dealer/shop today during lunch, and the mechanic told me that once a magnet breaks apart it usually means the end of a stator. So I knew I would have to replace that. I then asked if they sold the magnets seperate from the flywheel. Nope is all I was told, so now I have to buy a new stator and flywheel.
