Hawkeye problems
I bought my Hawkeye new in 2007. At this point it has only 90 hours and less then 800 miles. It is not abused, being used mostly to ride the grandkids around the property. A year ago (at 65 hours) the bike developed a clattering sound behind the cover at my left ankle on the bike. The noise was most noticable in neutral if you revved it and let it wind down. I took it to the dealer, they told me they replaced a bearing. For the next 10 hours things were cool, but the clattering slowly started again, getting louder and louder. I called the dealer and they told me not to worry about. I've stopped riding the bike, because I don't want to seriously damage it. Any suggestions on what "bearing" might be making the noise??? I'm only averaging +/- 8 mph and the bike has never been run at max rpm.
Thanks
Tom

Anybody else seen this? Mine started making this noise suddenly as well, and the bearing inside the clutch cover seems rough. I will replace the bearing, but it's hard to see how or why this bearing should go bad so prematurely. Doesn't seem like it would have much load on it. What gives? (besides the bearing!)

I replaced the bearing again with a quality bearing, and I still have a chattering sound when the engine rpm winds down. It's quieter since the new bearing, but still audible, even to my old ears. I'm riding the bike, but wish I could find a mechanic familiar with this model. I'm concerned that I may be damaging the tranny, which is a very expensive repair. Is there another bearing on the same shaft that might also be bad???

Well, I replaced the bearing, and the noise mine had been making went away. There is no doubt that the bearing was bad since it felt rough when I spun it on my finger. For my issue, I don't think the tranny would be affected, since I also heard the noise when in neutral. I'm supposing the tranny wouldn't be moving at all in neutral, so unless I start hearing or feeling something else going on, I will assume the tranny is okay. BTW, I got the bearing at Tractor Supply for about $7, though it is Chinese (like the original).

Gday fellas, greetings from Australia
I have had my 2009 hawkeye since new and it just started the noise you mention. 200 hours still under warranty the dealer mechanic was hoping it was a clutch bearing but no such luck. Its a bearing in the starter clutch and requires the whole back end pulling apart. It was a rattling noise at medium revs but settled to nothing at idle or full noise coming from just around my left ankle. Pain in the arse and i am starting to sniff lemon for the hawkeye as this is the second warranty job the first being a starter bendix clutch.

For one of my hawk's the noise was the bearing in the clutch cover. Replaced it and noise went away....
