Hey Jeremy,
I just joined the group today and am having the same problem.
I also have a 2005 Polaris Sportsman 500HO.
I tried 2 new batteries and both died.
I have replaced the ECM (silver box below the head light) because its a recall part.
ECM is the electronic control modual which obviously controls all electrical.
Got it free from the dealer. Thought forsure this would be it but no go.
Battery light came on after running 15 mins with head lights on. Even without
the head lights on my bike will still drain the battery.
If I or you find anything out lets pass it on please.
Cheers and good luck.

i had the same issues and the dealership thought it was the ECM but it turned out to be the stator. its the peak output that you cant measure thats why everything appears to work with the stator.

Does the 500 use a voltage regulator like the 800's?
