1st ATV Trip - Hatfield-Mccoy
Hello all. I'm new to this and am interested in going to WV for a few days of riding with my son. He's 12 and I'm too old to be doing this stuff. I've got a new 850 and I bought him a 90 Outlaw. We have a great time riding together but we ride on a few flat farms around home. We're near Louisville KY so it's a pretty good drive and I don't want to get there and find out I didn't bring something I need. I've been through the website and think I'd like to try rockhouse. Was thinking about a cabin at Twin Hollow.
A few questions and any help is greatly appreciated. Are helmets required? Is his 90 enough bike or will he be disappointed in what he can do? We normally wear jeans and boots but the pics I've seen show everybody in riding outfits. Is that necessary or a really good idea? How about gas? Do I need to take gas on the bike with me or can we get to fuel if necessary? Any other gear - air compressor, fix-a-flat, etc? How long do people generally ride? Do you take a lunch or head back to the lodge/cabin? Any other tips for a novice?
Thanks very much,
Bob

Helmets are #1 priority especially for a 12 year old. Never been to Hatfield but if its like Harlan Ky then the 90 will not work imo. I would look at getting him something larger with 4x4.

Twin Hollow is a great place to stay. The cabins are very nice. You can ride your ATV down into the town of Gilbert to get gas, go to McDonald's, go to Dairy Queen and the other restaurants. You can also ride to Man easily on a tank of gas and get gas and eat at Wendy's. You must wear a helmet on HM system. You do not need riding clothes. If you have a Garmin GPS you can go to GPSFileDepot - Custom Maps, Ximage hosting, tutorials, articles and more for your GPSr and download a map I made of all most all trails in WV including HM. You can also go to the following link and download the map along with "How to Instructions" on getting MapSource and how to install onto your GPSr. These maps work great on Nuvi's with the large screens. Another great place to stay is at Ashland Resort, it about 1.5 hours further down US52 than Gilbert. It is a fabulous place to stay. It is located on the Indian Ridge Trail System and the new Pocahanta's System opening this spring. It has a connector to the Pinnacle Creek System and it boarders about 600 miles of the Outlaw Trails. This is the most popular area to ride in WV. All of these systems along with about 120 of the popular Waypoints are on the map I mentioned. This is the Wagon Wheel, Hilltop, and Stair Steps area.

I will echo what BobT says about Ashland Resort ... We have stayed there several times and I love it there! He will have a TON OF FUN on that 90 on those trails systems around there ... I would stay away from the "most difficults" and the Outlaw Trails for him though ... some places on the Outlaw trails give me a fit sometimes ... lol ... HELMETS ARE A MUST ... trust me, so worth it ... my daughter who is also 12 passes up any other activity for a trip to HM ... anytime ... he is going to have the time of his life ... trust me 8)
Later ... Sneyeper

Living just across the hill from Ashland, I know that I see a lot of families on the trails here, H-M or what everyone calls the "outlaw trails". This area is full of trails that will suit any type of riding that you and your son will want to try.
