New WV ATV Trails Map
For those that are interested I just released a new WV ATV Trails 2.0 map. You can download it at the following link:
WV ATV Trails 2.0 Garmin Compatible Map - GPSFileDepot
The group I ride with has been exploring on the last few weekends around Anawalt, War, Coalwood, and West of Welch behind the Bowling Alley.
I have added a lot of trails south of 52 down toward Anawalt. Have also added some trails south of Welch around War, Coalwood, and Iaeger. Also, several trails west of Welch behind the bowling alley.
If you have never ridden the trails south of Welch they are some of the nicest in WV, wooded trails with some creeks. The only problem it is a long ride to just get there, best thing is to probably trailer.
This past Saturday we left Hilltop and headed down WMG Rd to US-52, then 5 miles of pavement to a trail, then to Lake Anawalt. We tried to cross the mountain to War and Berwind but the coal mine had the road blocked so we had to ride another 5 miles of road to Gary where we got gas and lunch. We then headed into the trails west of Gary. We took a very nice blue/red trail over toward War and down to Berwind Lake. We then took some nice wooded trails over to the Pizza Hut on 103 south of Welch. We took the trail up the mountain east of Pizza Hut and came out on US-52 at the old school just east of the Exxon and then back to Hilltop. It was a 110 mile loop.
On Friday we rode behind the bowling alley. One nice trail is Schoolhouse Rd. I have no idea why it is called a Rd since you enter the trail from the east end through a chain link gate in some lady's back yard. We rode a very very nice trail that got us to within 1/4 mile of US-52 and Iaeger but we were about 200' above them with no way to go down so we back tracked. We rode 130 miles on Friday.
PS: the trails with a "?" at the beginning of the name have been drawn on Google Earth and have not been verified yet. The ones we have verified have been pretty accurate. When we are going to go exploring we try and draw them up so we don't just wonder around aimlessly.

This is an electronic map that you load onto a Garmin GPSr. You can download "Basecamp" program from Garmins website and you can print the map from there. It will print a set of tiled maps that you can tape together just print off 8.5 x 11 maps.

I have updated the WV ATV Trails map to version 3.0
You can get it at the link below, the link has a description of the changes. This is a transparent map for Garmin GPSr's. This map covers Hatfield McCoy, Burning Rock, and Outlaw trails. It has some of the new HM Pocahontas trails.

Bob, thank you for the work you did on these maps. I only get a white square when I select the WV ATV Trails 3.0 maps in both Mapsource and Basecamp. Have you seen that before? I tried re-installing, but can't figure it out.

I suspect you are zoomed out too far. The outline of the maps is a square with a white background. Try using the mouse wheel and zooming in our use the zoom box at the top. I know of several people who have installed the map with no problem. Let me know if this solves it.

I am in the planning stages of a 3 day pack it in ride in WV. We typically ride the outlaw trails between Ashland and Welch. We are planning on this trip to start in the Ashland area and try to make it to the Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky border. Does anyone have any trail info or any pointers we should consider. We have stayed in the cabins and rode this area many of times but my late father always wanted to do a trip where we take everything with us and stay out for a few days. We are looking at the first weekend in march as our trip date. The main concern I have is gas but will make sure we plan accordingly. Thanks for the assistance.

Question for BobT
BobT,
First of all, thanks for taking the time to create the WV trail maps. They worked perfectly with a Garmin Nuvi 255w.
Some friends (I was unable to go) just got back from a ride this past weekend - Feb 25, 2012 - from Ashland Resort. They rode to Welch and jumped on the "Welch to Gilbert" trail near the Sterling Drive-Inn. They rode a good piece and came to a four-way intersection. To stay on the "Welch to Gilbert" trail at this intersection, they would need to preceed through an open yellow gate with "No Trespassing" signs posted by the Cliffs Natural Resources company. They said the gate looked freshly painted and the signs look new. Due to the time and weather, they turned around and headed back to Ashland.
We were wondering if this a new gate or if you have seen it before. Also, do you know how serious this company is with trespass enforcement?
I am not 100% sure where they were on the trail. I will discuss with my friend and try to pinpoint the location if needed.
Thanks
Ray

I am not 100% sure of what gate you are talking about but the one I know of has bypass on road called "Locked Gate Bypass". The Outlaw trails are constantly changing especially when the start a new logging or mining operation. I have heard from someone else that they were doing some work in that area and were frowning on going through there. The last time I was over that way was about a year ago and they were doing a lot of dozing on part of the dirt trail/road. I won't be going that way for awhile since we are currently riding trails we found between Mullens and Twin Falls State Park along with the new Pocahontas trails. If I get tracks from someone I will update the map. I plan on issuing a new map this spring when Pocahontas if finished and numbered and I will add the new Mullens trails which are very nice.
